We are closed for all County Holidays.

What We Do:

The County Drain Commissioner is elected every four years.  The department operates under Michigan Public Act No. 1956 as amended, with a budget appropriated by the Board of Commissioners from the general fund of the County.

We are dedicated to provide for the health, safety and welfare of Clare County citizens, the protection of surface water, the environment and to promote the long term environment and economic sustainability of Clare County.

Some of the duties and functions of the Drain Commissioner:

Ø  Is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and inspection of County Drains and streams as designated by the drain code. Look here for a list of Clare County Drains

Ø  Investigates complaints relative to established County Drains.

Ø  Determines and spreads drain assessments.

Ø  Secures right-of-way easements for County Drains.

Ø  Sets percent and provides for public review for affected landowners and units of government for drain assessments where proceedings require it.

Ø  Inspects and approves the construction and maintenance of County Drains.

Ø  Represents county drainage districts in any court proceedings.

Ø  Issue permits to cross or parallel a County Drain.

Ø  Quotes pay off information on Drain Assessments.
